N-amboo Oral Health Care continues to take initiatives for long-term sustainable development. Our GOOD products, including toothbrushes, tongue cleaners and mini-flossers, are made from bio-based plastic, sometimes referred to as plant-based plastic. The TePe company has been manufacturing quality products for over 50 years, and we want to continue this tradition with a focus on sustainability without compromising product safety, quality or hygiene.

How does bio-based or plant-based plastic work?

There are two non-renewable resources used to make plastic – crude oil and natural gas. TePe is switching to bio-based green polyethylene (PE) plastic instead of fossil-based plastics. GOOD products are made with renewable resources such as sugar cane and castor oil, so they recirculate as much as 95% of CO2 emissions back into the atmosphere.

Due to its low carbon footprint, sugar cane was chosen for production of the bio-based plastic material. Sugar cane has low waste and has a rapid lifecycle. It takes one year for sugar cane to grow, whereas bamboo requires several years to do so. Sugar is produced for food, and the by-products are used as fertilizer and as green polyethylene (bio-based plastic).

Safety should be considered

Currently, plastic is the best material in terms of hygiene, safety, durability, moldability, cost-effectiveness, and automation. By using bio-based plastic, TePe can manufacture their products in their Swedish manufacturing facility, where they have full control over the supply chain, use renewable energy, and ensure fair and safe working conditions during production.

Quality should be considered

As a result of bio-based polyethylene (plastic), N-amboo is able to manufacture ergonomic products that can be bent and adjusted accordingly. In order to comply with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standardized quality tests over time, bio-based plastics must have consistent material properties.

Hygiene should be considered

Plastic is less susceptible to bacterial growth than porous materials such as bamboo. Instead of other materials, why not utilize recyclable plastic in the production of goods? At N-amboo, our priority is offering hygienic and food-grade plastic without harmful chemicals. However, currently there are no recycled plastics that meet TePe’s strict standards for low CO2 impact. As TePe products are used in the mouth, it is crucial for N-amboo to ensure their safety for consumers. That’s why all of our products are BPA-free and made with food-grade N-amboo GOOD bio-based plastic.
